چکیده

This study examined how the phonetic details of the phonological systems for two different nativelanguage listener groups interact with their perception of the phonetic details of three nonnative consonant contrasts. Current theoretical models of cross-language and second language speech perception are evaluated by relating native Italian and native Danish listeners’ perceptual assimilation of audio tokens of English /b v w ð/ 1 to how well the two groups discriminate the corresponding English contrasts /b/-/v/, /w/-/v/, and /ð/-/v/. Results indicate some support for the models, but also performance differences between the groups that are unexpected by any existing models. Implications for existing hypotheses about non-native speech perception are discussed.

Native-language phonetic and phonological influences on perception of American English approximants by Danish and German listeners

Perception of non-native consonant contrasts may be influenced by phonetic, as well as phonological, properties of the listener’s native language. The impact of both factors on perception of American English /r l w j/ was investigated with native speakers of Danish and German, which have /r l j/ but lack /w/, thus employing /r/-/l/ but lacking /w/-/j/ and /w/-/r/ as phonological contrasts. Howe...

Perception of Italian and Japanese Consonant Length by Native Speakers of Australian English and Italian: A Pilot Study

We examined the perception of Italian (IT) and Japanese (JP) consonant length contrasts (singleton vs geminate) in two groups of listeners: native speakers of IT and Australian English (OZ). Our preliminary results suggest that the IT listeners’ experience with singleton/geminate contrasts was more beneficial than the OZ listeners’ experience with vowel length contrasts in processing JP singlet...

Cross-language perception of Japanese singleton and geminate consonants: preliminary data from non-native learners of Japanese and native speakers of Italian and australian English

We examined the perception of Japanese consonant length contrasts (singleton vs geminate) in four groups of listeners: two groups of non-native learners of Japanese, three each at highly-advanced (NNJ1) and upper-intermediate (NNJ2) levels, native speakers of Italian (IT) (n=10) and Australian English (OZ) (n=8) with no knowledge of Japanese. Because Italian, like Japanese, uses consonant lengt...

Sources of illusion in consonant cluster perception

Previous studies have shown that listeners have difficulty discriminating between non-native CC sequences and licit alternatives (e.g. Japanese [ebzo]-[ebuzo], English [bnif]-[b=nif]) (Berent et al., 2007; Dupoux et al., 1999). Some have argued that the difficulty in distinguishing these illicit–licit pairs is due to a ‘‘perceptual illusion’’ caused by the phonological system, which prevents li...

The tonal component of Estonian quantity in native and non-native perception

This paper focuses on the role of the pitch cue in the perception of Estonian quantity degrees. The significance of the tonal component is investigated through comparison of native vs. learned identification of the quantities. The study reports on perception tests with manipulated natural speech stimuli given to Estonian native (L1) listeners and non-native (L2) listeners with different languag...
